#1 Old Fishermans Wharf,
Monterey, CA 93940

Originally built in 1870, the Monterey Wharf was used mostly for business purposes, featuring prominently in Monterey’s booming sardine industry. When the sardine industry dried up in the 1940s the wharf was switched to a tourist destination, which is today the main attraction. Featuring dinning, shopping, whale watching and other entertainment, the wharf is a good way to blow a couple of hours.

As both the roommate and I were pretty damn starving, the first stop was Gilbert’s Seafood Grill which had a giant ass fish on the wall.

The free fried calamari appetizer. Nicely squishy and crunchy. Also, free is always good.

More fried calamari for the roommate. As the server had to double check on her order, I choose to believe that he would have brought out a different appetizer if he had remembered that calamri was already in our future. Still yummy, however.

My grilled chicken sandwich. The chicken was nice and juicy and the vegetable were crisp. Sadly I could not enjoy it as much as I wanted as we had to leave rather quickly to catch our whale watching tour.

Well, we thought we did, but sadly the whale watching was canceled due to bad weather conditions. Boooooo.

The view from the restaurant, featuring sea lions.

The sea lions from a different and closer angle.

Very Dramatic Statue of a Fisherman.

“I am a sea lion, I care not for you. Here is my butt.”

Conversely, Mr. Pelican is definitely sizing up the humans. Possibly for weak spots.

The Monterey Bay Silver Company. Much money was spent here, including on my first real string of pearls.

Pirates Cove Gifts and Things. Exactly what it says on the tin.

Carousel Candies. Truffles and fudge and cotton candy and taffy and oh dear god, stop me now.

Awesome-O-Meter: 3 1/2 Awesomes While it’s mostly an outdoor ocean themed shopping and eating experience, it’s quite a fun and unique one. It was disappointing to not be able to go whale watching but I don’t blame the operators for making a judgement/safety call.
